Dhaka airport green vs red channel — a walkthrough
Which customs channel to use at Hazrat Shahjalal, what happens in each, and why declaring something duty-free costs you far less than not declaring something dutiable.
After immigration and the baggage belt you reach two exits. Choosing between them is a declaration, and it is the moment most travellers get wrong — almost always by being over-confident rather than dishonest.
The short answer
- Green channel: you are carrying nothing that needs declaring.
- Red channel: you are carrying something dutiable, restricted, or over an allowance — including cash above the threshold.
- If you are unsure, take the red channel. Declaring something that turns out to be free costs you a few minutes. Walking green with something dutiable is a different category of problem.
What “nothing to declare” actually means
Green is not “I do not think anyone will mind”. It is a positive statement that everything you carry is within allowance. Take green only if all of these are true:
- No gold bars at all. Bars always attract duty.
- Worn ornaments within 100 g and 12 pieces of any one type.
- New phones within your yearly allowance (one, or two with a BMET card).
- Used phones within the two-handset allowance.
- Cash at or under USD 10,000 equivalent.
- Nothing on the prohibited or restricted list.
If any line is uncertain, that is a red-channel trip.
What happens in the red channel
You present what you are carrying, it is assessed, and you pay the duty assessed. For gold bars the figure follows the published per-tola rate, so you can work it out in advance with the calculator and arrive knowing the number.
Bring the printable summary if it helps — a clear written list of what you are carrying speeds up the conversation considerably.
Why people choose wrong
Three patterns account for most of it:
- Averaging across the family. Allowances attach to travellers, not to groups. Four people’s jewellery is not pooled into one 400 g allowance.
- Trusting last year’s rule. The phone slabs were abolished in July 2025 and the advice online has not caught up. Check the date on anything you read, including this page.
- Assuming gifts are different. They are not. An item’s allowance does not change because you are giving it away — see gifts you are carrying.
